CHAPTER VIII

JOYCE

The girls had married in strict rotation, and Joyce, sitting in her untidy jumper and skirt swinging her legs as she tried to make some pencil sketches, realised that it left her in a very awkward position. Now she was supposed to be the one who stayed at home to see after her father; she was the only one left to marry a solicitor and retrieve the family fortunes. Nothing could be further from her intentions. Isabel and Lilian might bound into marriage, but Joyce’s mecca was spinsterhood. She felt that suicide would be preferable to marrying a solicitor.

Lilian had been quite ill in Paris. Isabel was glowing about the son she would bear at Easter. Joyce realised that you could trust Isabel to make it a son, and do the right thing. Meanwhile her father was behaving most extraordinarily.

He invited Rosie Villiers to tea and they had it in the dining-room, asking Joyce to have hers elsewhere. It wasn’t that she wanted to have tea with them, but she was piqued that her father should have requested her to keep away. She did not know what to do.

Joyce had now left Miss Allan’s this term, and was to take an art course at the Technical School. This was a great concession on Harold’s part and the nearest Joyce could get to her heart’s desire, though not altogether satisfactory, she thought. She was itching to go farther, and do better. She envied a friend of hers, Hilda Wilks. Hilda was eighteen, and had a rich father himself interested in art who had let her go to a studio in Chelsea. It was a large, rambling old place just off the Embankment, with a couple of bedrooms, insanitary inconveniences and a cupboard of a kitchen, but Hilda was proud of it and was doing very well. She had asked Joyce to come and join forces, and Joyce had put forward this proposition to Harold. After all, if Hilda could live like this, why couldn’t she?

‘But who will see after ME?’ asked her father.

‘You’ve got Janet,’ she reminded him, but with no success, he would not let her go. On the afternoon that Rosie Villiers came to tea she was not sure that he had got Janet! Janet did not hold with tea in the dining-room for Harold and a blonde, whilst the rest of the world was requested to keep away. She said so.

‘If he’s going to do that here, I’m off,’ said Janet.

‘Oh Janet, you wouldn’t leave me?’

‘I wouldn’t stay with that piece in here.’

‘Supposing we both went away to Chelsea?’ Joyce put up her pet proposition.

‘Chelsea? Oh, we couldn’t go there, that isn’t respectable,’ said Janet and buttoned up her mouth with disapproval.

Neither of them realised that Harold was really having a most difficult time. Rosie had grown sick of matters dawdling along and had introduced more closely the young man friend. Rosie was not one of those who let the grass grow under their feet, and she
